All people need a coach or a mentor at some point in their lives. Coaches assist individuals to reach their potential! I have had coaches and mentors throughout my life. These individuals challenged, motivated, directed, encouraged, evaluated, judged and angered me at different times. Regardless of their behaviors, they caused me to grow and develop as a human being and as a professional. I learned from them that if I truly want to help an individual grow and develop then I need to care enough to be honest with that individual. Effective coaching offers both praise and chastisement.
People don't care how much you know until they know how much you care. The person you are coaching knows if you truly care about them. When I was working for a large multinational financial services company I had a boss who was a senor vice-president. He is a very charismatic man with a great deal of integrity. He was an informal mentor to me and added great value to my life. I pattern a lot of my own behaviors after his style of management and leadership. So individuals can be informal coaches in your life.
I often coach managers and salespersons. I find it incredibly rewarding. I have been able to help individuals find balance in their lives, attain the top of their respective professions and maximize the return on their own investment of time in our business.
Here is an example. Last year, I coached a lady for a number of months. She is a financial advisor with a large portfolio of customers. She was working 6 days a week, often 18 hours a day. She was totally exhausted and near a nervous breakdown. After we did a GAP analysis (we looked at her current and desired situations and the gap between the two), we decided how she was going to manage her client base. Through our interactions she dramatically reduced her working time to 5 days per week and 10 hours per day. She has regained her enthusiasm for the career and is a much happier person. Her income increased dramatically. She did the hard work and I only guided her in the right direction.
I love coaching when the individual I am coaching is willing to work hard and follow my advice. Maybe I can help you?
